How we can help....

We give legal advice & representation to people with low incomes in the following situations:

  • If you are at risk of eviction from your housing (private housing, City-owned housing, non-profit housing and co-operatives)
  • If housing repairs are needed
  • If there are other disputes with your landlord
  • If you are at risk of losing a rent subsidy

Our Range of Services

For each person who contacts us, we decide on the extent of assistance we can offer. We will usually try to help you by doing one or more of the following things:

  • Providing legal advice by telephone call or in person
  • Meeting you to review documents
  • Preparing documents to assist you
  • Representing you in an appeal to the Landlord and Tenant Board
  • We can help tenants get access to other resources if we are not able to assist you.

Please Note:

  • We do not give legal advice to tenants involved in disputes with other tenants or roommates. In that situation, we recommend contacting the Law Society Referral Service (1-800-268-8326)
  • We do not give advice about internal disputes in housing co-operatives, unless the result is eviction proceedings against you.

Tenant Duty Counsel Program at the Landlord & Tenant Board

If you are behind in rent payments and your landlord has filed an eviction application to the Landlord and Tenant Board, you must attend the Landlord and Tenant Board hearing. Arrive early! You can get legal advice (but not representation in your hearing) on the day of your hearing, from the Tenant Duty Counsel program that Ottawa’s legal clinics operate.
